Hôtel Dieu / Musée Greuze

Less than 10 minutes from the Greuze**** hotel is the Hôtel Dieu de Tournus and its famous Greuze Museum.

The Hôtel-Dieu de Tournus, now restored, is a fascinating example of 17th and 18th century hospital architecture. Built to meet the needs of the poorest, the layout of the sick rooms was designed to promote optimal air circulation, essential at the time to prevent infections. Large windows above the beds provided effective ventilation while protecting patients from direct drafts. Despite the absence of fireplaces, heat was provided by heaters and basin-shovels filled with embers, slipped under the bed sheets.

The Hôtel-Dieu was not only a place of physical care, but also a center of moral support and comfort. The hospital sisters took care of the sick, providing them with suitable food and remedies prepared from medicinal plants from the herb garden. These remedies were concocted in the apothecary, a place that is remarkably well preserved today, where you can admire the tools used by the sisters, such as mortars and stills. This apothecary is also one of the best preserved in France, testifying to the expertise of the time in terms of care.

The Greuze Museum: a tribute to the art and history of Tournus

In addition to its hospital history, the Hôtel-Dieu now houses the Greuze Museum , dedicated to the famous painter Jean-Baptiste Greuze, a native of Tournus. This museum occupies a wing of the former Hôtel-Dieu and offers visitors the opportunity to discover not only Greuze's works, but also archaeological and artistic collections that trace the history of the region. The museum's rooms are spread over three levels and include paintings, sculptures and archaeological objects, allowing a complete immersion in the cultural heritage of Tournus.

The works of Jean-Baptiste Greuze , including his portraits and genre scenes, are presented alongside pieces from his early days, as well as two self-portraits of the artist. This artistic journey is complemented by temporary exhibitions held in the adjacent auditorium, offering a varied perspective on art and history. By visiting the Greuze Museum, visitors can appreciate the cultural wealth of Tournus and understand the importance of this artist, whose works marked 18th-century art.
